CLOSET RAID: SHENAE GRIMES
Today is a day where uncharted territory is invaded, where the barrier of Mecca is broken, where the object of fantasy and wonderment is unveiled exclusively for you Style FILE readers: celebrity closets. We are thrilled to debut our celebrity editorial feature: CLOSET RAID. We're even more ecstatic and honored that the subject of our first raid is none other than one of our favorite trendsetters to watch on the scene, actress SHENAE GRIMES. Read on as Style FILE takes you on a tour of her closet and talks with her about her favorite wardrobe staples.
When you first walk into Shenae Grimes' apartment, it's all at once warm, personable, and inviting; just like Grimes herself. The pint-sized star of the CW series
90210 has an infectious, charismatic personality offset with an artistic yet effortless sense of style. As she leads the way into her closet, she haphazardly throws on some long necklaces along the way; an afterthought that somehow perfectly pulls together her oversized taupe blazer, black top and jeans. "Sorry about all that," she says indicating to the piles of clothing on her bed. 'Not at all,' we think as our eyes scan the mix of soft vintage cotton, silk and chiffon: we kind of want to dive right into it (literally).
Grimes is more than just a talent who happens to dress well; she has written contributing articles for NYLON chronicling New York Fashion Week and completed an internship at Fashion Television in Toronto pre-
90210. When asked how she'd describe her style she said it's, "hard to define because it changes day to day depending how I'm feeling. I like to be comfortable and choose versatile pieces I can wear day and night." We find she has an inventive, experimental nature with clothing not unlike an Olsen sister, which is the type of mindset shared by innovators in fashion. Said Grimes, "I don't wear a lot of color, a muted-palette is far more my speed (usually black) so I play with texture and fabric to make an outfit pop." But her fashion tendencies lean toward reasons of practicality and utility as well: "us shorties need height but I can't handle pumps, so I opt for wedges and platforms." It's this combination of smart meets avant-garde dressing that has us looking forward to more memorable fashion moments from Grimes both on on the street and red carpet. ALLIE WOOD

Style FILE: Where are your favorite places to shop?
Shenae Grimes: Barney's and Curve are my favorite spots to indulge but my favorite finds usually come from the eclectic vendors at the Melrose/Fairfax flea market.
SF: Who are your favorite designers?
SG: Lim, Lam, Lang and Wang could complete my dream wardrobe. [*Editors note: Phillip Lim, Derek Lam, Helmut Lang, and Alexander Wang] They understand petite frames which is hard to find. As is the balance of edginess and elegance within their pieces. Isabel Marant is also a new favorite of mine. She does casual chic to Parisian perfection.
SF: Who are your personal style muses?
SG: I love Chloe Sevigny's outrageous vintage style and Sienna Miller always looks perfectly thrown-together but Lou Doillon's definitely my girl-crush right now.
SF: What are your wardrobe staples?
SG: I throw my Helmut Lang blazer over any outfit to dress it up. The sharp tailoring adds instant class to pull together any low-key outfit.
James Perse
and
Alexander Wang
tees are my go-to basics; they fall just right because their fabrics are so soft and drapey.
SF: If you could add anything to your closet right now, what would it be?
SG: An amazing leather vest. I'm obsessed with leather but summer's coming and my jackets are too heavy. Something cute and grungy to throw over floral dresses and high-waisted shorts would be a lovely addition to the closet.
